LUMA
31 May 2019 -Like an extension of the May school holidays, Queen’s Birthday weekend in the Southern Lakes was the long weekend where it was too cold for sun or lake-based activities and too early for skiing. As children we’d meander about during the day or work our way through our book stashes, playing cards or watching a movie in the evening.
In 2015, bright spark Duncan Forsyth of Mount
Edward wines, decided Queen’s Birthday provided a perfect opportunity to cast
some early winter luminescence over the seasonal void by installing some fancy lights in the
Queenstown Gardens. A bit like Sydney’s Vivid, only colder.
But LUMA is more than just a light show; it’s four nights of light sculptures, illuminated art, and performance. It’s a community event, supported by local government and sponsors from our two local provinces. “LUMA is about connecting people, illuminating spaces, bringing local, national and international artists and businesses together’. In 2016 there were 10,000 visitors, last year over 50,000.
It starts on darkness, Friday May 31. It’s free and it’s fabulous.
