History of The Cow

The Cow has been operating from its historic premises since 1977, making it Queenstown's oldest continuously operating restaurant. Situated in Cow Lane, the stone barn housed cows which used to wander down the lane for daily milking.

The Cow was the vision of a couple of Queenstown locals who saw an opportunity to restore the run-down stone stable and establish what quickly became Queenstown's favourite restaurant.

During her reign, 'The Cow' had become an uncomplimentary nickname for her Majesty, Queen Victoria. She had allegedly likened breast-feeding to being a cow and warned her daughters to avoid the practice. In tribute, as well as featuring on our logo, there are many pictures of The Queen, her husband Prince Albert and their large family in the restaurant.

In the 80s and 90s The Cow gained a reputation for wild parties; hosting apres ski celebrations for The Cow's all-conquering ski team, dancing on the tables and wielding the infamous shot-ski.

Current owners Josie Watters’ and Malcolm Price's long association with The Cow started during this time. They added to The Cow story by opening The Cow Wanaka in 2006.

The menu has remained unchanged since opening day, making Her Majesty's Pleasure and Portofino Queenstown icons of their own.

A true Queenstown institution, The Cow's rustic ambience and delicious fresh food has been a favourite of locals and visitors alike for over 40 years.
